In New York, it’s common knowledge that the dating pool is so unfairly skewed toward dudes that smart, cool, attractive women frequently feel like their only option is to date the kind of guys who would, in a fair and just world, be considered not only well below their station but would be altogether shunned by society for being basically hideous monsters. A number of dudes who work on Wall Street or who are affiliated with the magazine N+1 fit this description. So does Adam Hochfelder, a young real-estate developer who, back in 2008, was indicted for stealing more than $17 million from banks, business associates, relatives, and friends, including a member of his wedding party, and who was indicted again last month for stealing another $2.5 million from investors.

Part of the reason for Hochfelder’s deception, his lawyers say, was his cocaine problem, which was so bad that he couldn’t, his lawyers say, “tell fantasy from reality.” Hochfelder eventually had to have multiple operations to repair the damage he did to his nose. But despite all of this — the fact that he lied and betrayed everyone he has ever known, the fact that he has rather a lot of debt and no means of paying it off thanks to his ruined reputation, the fact that on top of all of this he has two kids in private school — Hochfelder managed to find a new girlfriend:

Key highlights for the month;
Long/Short Equity funds outperformed major equity markets in January, finishing down an estimated 1.70% as managers' lower net exposures protected them from the full brunt of the market correction. Many managers would have finished in positive territory were it not for long positions in Technology stocks which, despite good fundamentals, fell in January on fears over the economic recovery. In general, equity markets reacted negatively to news of the Greek budget deficit and the concomitant drop of Greek bond prices as well as the Chinese central bank's credit tightening over concerns of overheating in their housing market.Event Driven managers had a generally positive month as a number of managers took advantage of inefficient pricing in smaller issue securities resulting from specific restructuring events as well as banks in Japan and Europe lightening their books. Credit markets generally performed well and were negatively correlated to equity markets, benefiting a number of credit-oriented managers.  Global Macro managers experienced mixed performance with a number of fundamentally-driven quant macro models posting positive returns after capitalizing on tactical moves in currencies and bonds. On the other hand, managers with heavy equity exposures typically underperformed. Managed Futures posted the worst performance among the sectors as trend followers fell prey to increased pressure in commodities markets. The DJ-UBS Commodities Index finished down 7.28% for the month, crude oil fell over 8%, and gold was down 1.47% partly as a result of the strengthening US dollar.

I’m not usually a huge fan of investing in apparel retail (discretionary spending and fad risk), but I have two kids and therefore know Gymboree (GYMB) well as a consumer. When the stock showed up on my screens that look for a combination of high EBIT/EV yield and high return on invested capital, I decided to take a closer look.Business overviewGymboree is a specialty retailer focused on children’s clothing (newborns up to ~10 years old depending on the brand). The company was founded in San Francisco in 1976 as a provider of play programs for kids and parents - which is still provided through over 600 non-retail locations (primarily franchised and only a small portion of revenue/profits). As of 10/31/09, the company operated 951 stores: 630 Gymboree, 139 Gymboree Outlet, 120 Janie and Jack and 62 Crazy 8. The company’s investor relations website is here.The Gymboree brand is a middle price point, while Janie and Jack is the high end and Crazy 8 is the low end (very analogous to Gap (GPS), Banana Republic and Old Navy, respectively). In my opinion, children’s clothing has two notable advantages over other specialty apparel retail: (1) kids grow, so new clothes are required and purchases are less discretionary; and (2) there is less of a focus on trends/fashion in the newborn-elementary school set than among teens, adult, etc.I won’t reproduce the recent financial history here, but the young management team seems to have done a capable job during both the strong years of 2006-2007 and the dismal years of 2008-2009.
